i don't understand your problem.
i tried:
[nico@golde:~] $ ls -al test
-rw-r--r--    1 nico     users           6 2004-04-08 11:46 test
[nico@golde:~] $ test>test
[nico@golde:~] $ ls -al test
-rw-r--r--    1 nico     users           0 2004-04-08 11:47 test

but it is not wondering because you put the output of the first command
in the file after the >. because you have not a real command and you
have no real output you overwrite the file with an empty output stream
and the file is 0 byte after it.
haven't i understand your problem correctly?
